Located along Highway 20 on the east edge of Valentine, Nebraska is Henderson's IGA, Inc.
The story began in 1936, when Dale and Hazel Henderson bought a general store and post office at Riverview, Nebraska. They sold grocery staples, bought eggs and cream from local suppliers, had a gasoline hand pump out front, and because of their location near the Niobrara River, were involved in the wood trade with local men cutting trees along the river as a means of making ends meet.
In 1944, Dale, Hazel, and their son Jerry, and their daughter Jane moved to Stuart, Nebraska, where they bought a variety and grocery establishment. On March 8, 1946, they joined the Independent Grocers Alliance (IGA).
In 1936, Mr. E. C. Pestel and Mr. W. L. Boyer established a grocery business on the west side of Main Street in Valentine.
In 1947, Clarence and Belle Kerr bought the grocery business from them, moving it to 148 E. Main Street.
In 1957, Jerry Henderson had his military obligation and college fulfilled, so he and his father got together to discuss what the future held for both of them. At the time, Kerr's IGA store in Valentine was for sale and IGA had become a familiar name in Valentine. Dale and Hazel sold their store in Stuart and bought Kerr's IGA from Belle Kerr. Jerry, his wife Mary, and their son Tim moved to Valentine from Crete, Nebraska to join Dale and Hazel in the family business. A daughter, Cindy, was born after moving to Valentine.
Feeling the need to expand, the Hendersons moved their grocery business around the corner to 148 E. 1st Street in 1960. Seven years later in 1967, an addition was added on the west side of the building. By this time, Tim was old enough to carry out groceries and do various other jobs. Not long afterwards, Cindy also began helping in the store a few hours a week. They continued to work part-time until they graduated from high school and some summers when they were home from college.
In 1975, Prairie Village shopping area on the east edge of Valentine was completed. Henderson's IGA moved in and occupied 15,000 square feet of this space. The new location afforded more parking, a larger product selection, expanded bakery, and the introduction of a delicatessen.
After graduation from the University of Nebraska in 1979, Tim moved back to Valentine, joining the family business.
Improvements continue to be made to Henderson's IGA store. The era of technology arrived in 1982 with the introduction of scanning; giving customers quicker and more accurate service. In 1995, the building was expanded to 22,500 square feet and completely remodeled.
Tim assumed ownership of Henderson's IGA and the business was incorporated in 1996.
The 50th Anniversary of Henderson's IGA in Valentine happened in 2007. The store was again modernized with new decor inside and an updated store front.
In 2008, the store received the ultimate honor of being chosen the "International IGA Retailer of the Year"!
